New to martial arts? Start here

You don't need to be fit.
You don't need experience.
You just need to show up.

This page exists for one reason: to answer everything going through the head of a 30–50 year old who has never trained and is nervous about walking in. Every point below is exactly what actually happens here — nothing dressed up.

“I'm out of shape.”

Turning up is how you get fit — trying to get fit first is how people put it off for two years. You set your own pace in every class, and you can stop whenever you need to.

“I'm too old for this.”

Almost certainly not the oldest person there. Our adult classes run from people in their late teens to people in their fifties, and a good share started in their thirties or forties with no background in anything.

“I've never trained any martial art.”

That's the most common starting point, not the unusual one. The first class is built to be followed by someone who has never done it, taught one step at a time.

“Everyone else will be better than me.”

Everyone on the mats walked in for the first time not knowing what they were doing. Beginners are paired with experienced training partners whose actual job is to help you, not beat you.

“I don't want to compete.”

You don't have to. Training and competing are two separate choices — plenty of people train for years purely for themselves and never step onto a competition mat.

“I'm worried about getting hurt.”

Jiu jitsu is trained with control, not force — you tap, your partner stops. Beginners drill without resistance and are never paired with someone who can't control themselves. Muay Thai beginners work pads, not sparring.

“What do I even wear?”

Shorts, a t-shirt, and a water bottle. Nothing to buy for your three free classes — we have loan gear if you need it.

“Can I try it before deciding anything?”

That's exactly what the three free classes are for. No card, no contract, no sales pitch at the door. You can even come in and just watch a class first if that feels easier.
