The honest version

Your first hour,
minute by minute

The thing that stops most people isn't price and it isn't fitness. It's not knowing what they're walking into. So here it is, start to finish.

William Moraes, founder and head coach at Mentality Jiu Jitsu

Who you'll actually meet

William Moraes founded Mentality and still coaches on the mats himself. Chances are he'll be the one greeting you at the door on your first night — so it's a familiar face, not a stranger behind a desk.

−10:00Before

You arrive early

Come ten minutes before class. Someone will meet you at the door, take your name, and show you where to put your things. You don't need to know anyone and you don't need to explain yourself.

00:00Start

Nobody makes you introduce yourself

No circle, no announcement, no being singled out as the new person. You line up at the back, you follow along, and that's it.

00:05Warm-up

Movement, at your own pace

A light warm-up to get moving. If something hurts or you need to stop, you stop. There is no punishment for sitting one out and nobody will comment on it.

00:15Technique

One thing, taught slowly

The coach demonstrates a single technique and breaks it into steps. You are then paired with someone experienced whose actual job is to help you get it right — not to beat you.

00:35Drilling

Practice with no resistance

You repeat the movement while your partner lets you work. This is where it starts to click. You will be bad at it. Everyone was.

00:50Rolling

You can sit this part out

Live sparring happens at the end. On your first night you are welcome to watch instead — plenty of people do, and no one thinks anything of it. When you do join in, you go with someone who knows how to control the pace.

01:00Finish

You leave knowing whether it's for you

No sales pitch at the door, no contract in your face. You've got two more free classes to decide. Most people come back the next night.
